The Schipperke — pronounced "SKIP-er-kee" — is a small, fox-faced, tailless Belgian breed with a personality far larger than its compact frame suggests. The name means "little captain" or "little skipper" in Flemish, a reference to the breed's long history as a working dog on the canal barges of Belgium, where Schipperkes served as ratters, watchdogs, and companions to the bargemen navigating the waterways between Brussels and Antwerp. The breed is one of the oldest small breeds in Belgium, with records of Schipperke-type dogs dating to the 16th century, and the breed was formally standardized and shown in Belgium as early as 1690 — making it one of the earliest documented dog shows in history. The Schipperke's most distinctive physical feature is its natural taillessness — many are born without a tail entirely, while others are born with short tails — combined with its dense, jet-black double coat that forms a distinctive ruff around the neck and a cape over the shoulders, giving it a uniquely silhouetted, almost wolf-like profile. The breed earned the affectionate nickname "little black devil" from Belgian workers for its mischievous, inquisitive, and seemingly fearless character. Queen Marie Henriette of Belgium became an enthusiastic Schipperke owner in the 1880s, which dramatically boosted the breed's popularity across Europe.
